This Patch of Sky, Hyding Jekyll, Soilroot at The Lazarus Pit
Words and photos by Chris Muravez
There was an interesting mix of people that showed up to the Lazarus Pit tonight. Not being your normal metal or punk bands that were booked, Soilroot, Hyding Jekyll and This Patch of Sky (TPOS) drew in a more detuned crowed. Middle aged women, plain clothed guys and gals mixed in with the usual dreadlocked tattooed and scurvy regulars as if there was not a dichotomy of two worlds colliding here. Thus proving the diverse nature of the small town we call Eugene. Shortly before the show started, a woman in her forties dressed to the nines asked if this was where the show was to be held. She commented that it looked a little scary, and I did not even try to hold back a chuckle. Timidly she entered the abode where dirty heathens were known to frequent. Courage and soldier on lady!
Soilroot finished their sound checks and began their performance. I’ve rarely seen a band that has only played one previous show put on a technically proficient performance.

Their particular blend of hard rock, blues, prog metal and rock’n’roll rocked the house. I enjoyed every note, from the shattering bass slaps, to the smooth riffs on guitar. With a little refinement I believe they can pull a larger crowd at a larger venue.

Up next at the Laz Pit was Hyding Jekyll, and the three piece group definitely put on a show. An eclectic mix of early 90’s grunge, influence from bands like clutch and Mastodon combined together to produce some seriously smooth sounds.

The front runner and bassist put forth enough energy to light up the room. I really enjoyed listening and watching as they put forth their combined talents and entertained the crowd.

Unfortunately I had to depart before TPOS came on. Although from what I’ve heard on their site, I know I missed something special Most people were there for them, and I’m sure they delighted the fans to no end. I won’t miss them next time though, I promise.
