Show Hobblin’ W/Fatty 12/16/11

My night last night started at Luckey’s with a cold Oakshire Amber and the folksy, old timey tunes of Breakers Yard. Doing some originals and some traditionals (traditional down to an old school suitcase-drum kit), these guys got the evening started off right.

As their set wound down, I was just getting going. I decided it was time to see what else downtown had to offer, so I made my way to $2 tecates and Kalico (salem) at John Henry’s.
Kalico plays super catchy, radio-ready, head noddin’ tunes that sound like it’s 1994, Gin Blossoms never broke up, and Alternative pop/rock still reigns (maybe things are different in our state capitol), but they definitely own it like they built it themselves.

Stumbling on, I made my way down to The Oak Street Speakeasy just in time to catch indie-rollers Hot For Chocolate. Elements of punk, rock and alterna-everything worn on their sleeves, these guys still have a sound all their own, and a fantastic energy about them.

By the end of the set I was getting antsy, so I grabbed some food cart grub and went back to Henry’s to catch a bit of Homeschool’s set. What I caught of their set, aside from a pretty sick instrumental rock opener, was pretty much straight forward blues/rock.

At this point, the night gets hectic and fuzzy. I ran into friends who were rampaging downtown. Got dragged into pictures with that guy who plays sax on the street corner, ropped into drinks I didn’t need, and wound up back at Luckey’s barely able to pay attention to the show, which is sad, because from what I gather, Hot Milk is a pretty good band. Loungy, jazzy, mellow contemporary rock to settle the soul and iron the kinks outta your evening, which, they did I guess, because I found myself kicked back rehydrating by the end of their set, and ready to call it a night.

Apparently neither Breakers Yard, nor Hot For Chocolate have an online presence whatsoever. Strange. But we have video footage of both on our youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/exiledineugene/videos
