Full Plate Friday: Show Hopping With Fatty

Words, Photos & Junk Food by Joshua “Fattle Creek Records” Finch

Last Friday was hectic. Country fair be damned, there was still so much happening that I couldn’t keep up. Here’s the rundown of what I DID catch:

Memento Ink’s one year anniversary art show/party, which was a good time indeed. The show featured art by the shop’s tattoo artists/staff, refreshments (grown up beverages and all ages) a free drawing for ink, and 2 live sets by local rockers, Gladhander.

Gladhander

Gladhander has a post grunge-metal thing going that is as much Alice In Chains as it is bar fightin’ hard rock. All long time area musicians, these guys are tight, and loud, especially in a tattoo shop, not specifically built for a ruckus.

Ears screaming I made my way to another box fulla noise, The Gathering Place.

Greeted by the closest thing I’ve heard to the desperate pleading yelps of Jeff Suffering* since, well, Jeff Suffering… ahem, anyway, I made my way inside.

Strength Inside

The shriekings, it turned out, belonged to Stephen Klabo, who as the vocalist for Strength Inside, delivers journal entries via shot vocal chords at the top of his lungs over sparse post-emocore instrumentation. Being rather fresh faced and sporting straight-edge x’s, the boys could be shrugged off as novelty by some, but this band has a presence that demands attention and I’m curious to see what comes of them.

Crush The Adversary

Crush The Adversary have a good thing going. Dual guitar attack, high and low growls coming outta the same mouth, driving double bass, and plenty of energy. Not to mention being that super rare not-preachy christian band, stating simply “We’re christians and we’re sorry for the way christians have treated you, judged you, that’s not how it’s supposed to be.” Fuckin A.

Kids We Used To Be

The Kids We Used To Be play straight fuckin hardcore punk stuff to circle pit your ass off to. They aren’t re-writing any rules and inventing anything new, but who needs new if the old shit is still fun? As if to drive the point home, they covered “I Like Food” by the Descendants, ain’t a thing wrong with that.

Aeolus

Aeolus probably sounds familiar. They had a bit of a buzz going, but went on hiatus, or broke up, or something (probably depends on who you ask, it usually does) about 2 years back. This doesn’t matter. What does matter is that this new incarnation of Aeolus is here to rip your face off and slap the shit outta you with it. Phil still screams like a man posessed and refuses to wear shoes, but behind him is an all new linuep crafting mathy hardcore that sounds like Snapcase and Converge had a baby that shot outta the canal clutching an abacus. Hell yes.

Sadly, I hadda scram before the GP show was over and make my way back across the bridge.

[Break for Comedy In Exile at 5th st Cornucopia*, which I hosted, but forgot to take pictures of. Facepalm]

After drinks and laughs, some friends and I headed to Black Forest to close the night.

The Entity

In case you haven’t seen The Entity before, this is a band that thrives on trial and error. I’ve seen multiple manifestations of this band, 3 piece, 4 piece, but this new lineup, as a 6 piece, with a new vocalist, is one I’d like to see last. I’m not sure of the circumstances that led to Zack leaving the band, and enjoyed him as a vocalist, but this new arrangement seems more comfortable for the band, and overall more cohesive. Maybe it’s just because the changes have caused the band to fall back, regroup, and become excited about this new beast, but whatever the reasons, The Entity we knew is gone, replaced with a bigger, meaner monster, and it’s angry. Catch them (and Aeolus) at The Lazarus Pit on August 4th. Should be EPIC!!
