The Night I Got Wasted & Caught PART Of A Great Folk Show

So there I was: downtown, hanging, killing beers on the porch of an unnamed downtown bar with a large outdoor smoking patio (yeah, you can probably guess which one) after sipping beers at an early Mood Area 52 show (see last post) when I bump into some friends, one of which is one Sam AKA Beefcake The Piano Truck guy, and they ask if I’m going to see Jessie Williams at the goat. “Am now” says I, being the down for fun (especially if I’m already drinking) sorta guy that I am, all the while having no idea who Jessie Williams is.

Jessie Williams, it turns out, is a folk/americana artist from AZ,  who is kinda awesome, and I have a sneaking suspicion was as drunk as I was, though it didn’t seem to hinder her performance one bit.

Super blurry video cuz I was drunk and MAY have put a fingerprint on my lens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxqCP318ZNY&feature=relmfu

After Jessie was a Ari & Her Banjo. Ari is a quiet girl with a big voice, and all she needed to hold the crowd was her voice and a banjo. Pleasantly surprised, I killed another pint and enjoyed her set.

Josue Kinter followed with his own charming brand of freak folk, accompanied by a saw player. Sadly, I only got to stick around for a few brief tunes before getting distracted by a sidequest (coincidentally it involved more drinking) and missed the last couple acts. Sorry guys :(

Put on YR stompin’ shoes.

Check out The Wainwright Brothers “A Wainwright Brothers EP”, if you love foot stompin’ old time bluegrass that sounds like unfinished hardwood floors, a warm fire and the people you love.  If you happen to catch this today, they’re playing Luckey’s downtown tonight at 10pm.

Pardon the video quality, but we couldn’t help but share this snippet from the Alder Street All Stars show last Saturday

Why we don’t care about The Devil Makes Three

-J. Fatty Ferris -

Ok, so that heading was merely intended to grab your attention. We don’t hate DMT, we respect that they have a huge draw and are loved locally. However, their WoW Hall show last night was sold out. If anyone has pictures, and some words to share about the show, we’ll gladly post ‘em.

That said, there were a small army of bands playing every available bar venue downtown last night, plenty of shows to go around, and in my stumblings, these were the ones I was able to catch.

First was a personal favorite of mine, The Alder Street All Stars at The Granary. Though in smaller numbers than I remember, they still deliver a good, high energy set of foot stompin’ bluegrass, that’d scratch the itch for anyone who wasn’t able to get their hands on a DMT ticket.

Next I dropped by the Oak Street Speakeasy for a pint of Vanilla Porter and to catch Basin & Range. However, I was a bit early and wound up nodding my head to the jammy funk stylings of The Upstate Trio

But then my beer was gone and my attention span faltering, I heard rumor of a punk show at the Black Forest and moments later found myself knee deep in a tall can of Iron City lager moshing around to high octane skate tunes of Secnd Best.

Then it was off to Luckey’s to check out this band, Furniture Girls, that I’d heard about from a really drunk guy earlier in the evening, apparently one of his favorite bands. Kinda pop-rock/90’s alt rock sorta stuff.

Then someone told me about a last minute, guerrilla sort of rock show happening at Jameson’s (who never ever has bands) and I decided I had to see that. However, I got there to find the usual Saturday night fodder, with a mysteriously blocked off corner private seating area that looked to promise things to come later…

So I moved on (for the moment) to John Henry’s where local face melters, New World Sinner, were throwing it the fuck down for a crowd of maybe seven, while the bar area was full of people apparently not into metal, sad. They still brought a big brutal set.

I found myself outside for a breath of fresh air and heard the tell-tale clamoring from the end of the block. Things at Jameson’s were under way. So I knocked back an anejo and set up shop by the pool tables amongst some baffled college kids to watch local alt-prog-freakout-rockers, Kemosabe, smash my night to pieces the way I like.

Let it never be said that nothing ever happens in Eugene on the weekend.

Sorry to the bands I missed (Basin & Range, Faithless Saints, Conjugal Visitors, Lowmen, etc etc etc) I have a short attention span and only so much beer money.
